CELERY gets insude Pits and Fissures
The toothbrush cannot prevent cavities between teeth and inside Pits and Fissures. WHY?
* No1. See Plaque * No3. Glass Model of groove * Colouring Book Remember these facts
* Plaque changes sugars and starches to acid between teeth and inside grooves, each time we eat.
* Fluoride increases tooth resistance to acid attack.
* 80% of cavities occur inside pits and fissures on chewing surfaces where the brush cannot reach.
* Dentists can apply a sealant to prevent these cavities in grooves but they often need replacing.
* Brushing gum margins and flossing between teeth before breakfast removes plaque.
* Plaque can double every 20 minutes.
* Plaque is always present inside pits and fissures to cause acid attack when eating.
* Saliva neutralises acid and repairs demineralised tooth where it has access.
* Saliva and brushing do not have access inside pits and fissures.Pits and Fissures

These photos show pits and fissures in teeth where 80 % of cavities develop. About 20% of cavities also occur between teeth. Brushing can only reach gum margins. So it is necessary to also use flossing and chewing skills.Flossing Skills can be improved and a teaching aid is being developed to make this easy even for young children but for now we suggest that everyone should:
Floss between teeth and brush with fluoride toothpaste before breakfast to reduce plaque.
Chew celery and cheese before eating to force cheese inside grooves to seal these spaces.
Chew celery after eating to remove food and forces saliva around teeth and inside grooves.
Saliva neutralises acid and repairs demineralised tooth where it has access.Let us use a glass model of a fissure in a tooth and see if this is true.
Take two pieces of glass about 19mm wide and 60mm long.
Spread a 3mm bead of white silicone sealant along each side of one and three beds across the middle like a H and sandwich the two strips of glass together so they are just touching and there is a pocket at each end.
Leave to set at least overnight then go to lesson 3 using the Glass Model. For more info contact Plaque Watchers or
